Japan-China Tensions: How to Understand UN Dynamics

The big argument between China and Japan is now happening at the United Nations (UN) (Japan-China). This strong fight started because of words said by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. She talked about what would happen if China used its military against Taiwan. Takaichi said that this event could be a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan. This phrase means Japan could use its right of collective self-defense.

China became very angry about these words. China believes Takaichi is wrong to talk about the internal affairs of Taiwan. Japan, however, thinks Takaichi’s statement has needed. Japan must be clear about its own safety.

This fight is going on with official letters sent to the top UN leader. It is putting this important issue, the future of the Taiwan Strait, right in front of the world. This clash shows that the two biggest economies in Asia do not trust each other at all. Japan-China

The Reason: Takaichi’s Talk of Danger Japan-China

The problem started on November 7, 2025. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was talking to the Japanese parliament, called the Diet. A law maker asked her a simple question. The question was: what if the People’s Republic of China (PRC) used its military to hurt Taiwan? What if China blocked the seas around Taiwan? Japan-China

Takaichi gave a very specific answer. She said this situation could called a “survival-threatening situation” (sonritsu kiki jitai). This legal term is important in Japan’s 2015 security laws. Japan-China

These laws say one thing. If an attack on a close friend makes Japan’s own safety severely in danger, Japan’s military can act. Japan’s military has called the Self-Defense Forces (SDF). They can use a small amount of force to help a friend. This has called collective self-defense. They can do this even if Japan has not attacked first. Japan-China

Takaichi’s words were in line with Japanese law. But she was very clear. She linked Taiwan’s safety to Japan’s safety. This was new. Before, Japan was never this clear. This vagueness has called “strategic ambiguity.” Chin saw Takaichi’s clarity as a serious mistake. Chin said Japan crossed a “red line.” Japan-China

China Strikes Back: Fighting at the UN Japan-China

China reacted quickly. It used strong diplomatic tools. The United Nations became the main place for the fight. China began a legal and political attack. Japan-China

The Letters Go to the UN

The main part of the fight is the official letters. The Ambassadors from both countries sent them to the UN Secretary-General. These letters have shared with every country in the world. Japan-China

  1. China’s First Letter (November 21): The PRC Ambassador to the UN, Fu Cong, wrote a very harsh letter. He said Takaichi’s words were “very bad” and a “big breaking of international law.” China made a serious charge. It said Japan wanted to use its “military in the Taiwan issue” for the first time since World War II. China gave a warning. It said that if Japan tried to use its military, China would call it an “act of aggression.” China would then use its own right of self-defense under the UN Charter. Japan-China
  2. China’s Focus on History: China also used history in its letter. It said Japan, a country defeated in World War II, was trying to break the global rules made after the war. China talked about the “enemy state clauses” of the UN Charter. This was a clear legal threat. It has meant to make Japan look like a danger to the world.

Other Strong Actions

China also did other strong things besides the letters:

  • Military Show: China sent out many naval ships and coast guard vessels. There were over 100 of them. They moved around East Asian waters. This was a clear sign of power. It has meant to scare Japan. Japan-China
  • Economic Fight: China kept its ban on Japanese seafood. It said this was because of “strong public anger” in China over Takaichi’s words. This was a way to punish Japan’s economy. Japan-China

Japan Stands Firm: It’s About Self-Defense Japan-China

Jap has refused to take back the Prime Minister’s words. Japan used its own letters to the UN to defend its actions.

Japan’s Argument to the World

Japanese Ambassador to the UN, Kazuyuki Yamazaki, sent letters to fight China’s claims.

  1. No Aggression: Japan’s letters stated clearly that China’s charges have “not true” and “must rejected.” Japan said its military policy has only for “defense.” The SDF can only use force when it has absolutely needed to protect Japan or a threatened friend. Japan-China
  2. Following Rules: Japan stressed that it follows all international laws and the UN Charter. Tokyo argued that Takaichi’s words were just a simple explanation. She was just telling the truth about how Japan’s existing defense laws work in a possible crisis. Japan-China
  3. The Real Danger: Japan’s main point is simple. The safety of the Taiwan Strait has directly linked to Japan’s safety. If there has a war there, the vital sea routes that bring food and energy to Japan will be cut off. This is a real “existential crisis” that the government must plan for. By not taking back the statement, Japan is showing China it is ready to defend itself and its friend, the United States. Japan-China

The Result: A Very Risky Situation

The ongoing argument between China and Japan at the UN shows one thing. The tensions in East Asia are very high and serious. By taking this fight to the UN, both countries want to tell their story to the world. But this action also makes the world worry more about a possible war. Japan-China

China is using the UN to put legal and political pressure on Japan. It wants to stop Japan from getting involved in a Taiwan problem. It also wants to separate Japan from the United States. Japan, with help from the United States, is strong. It will not take back a statement it feels is needed for its own safety.

No one is backing down. China is using its military and economy. Japan is standing firm on its right to defend itself. This shows that the mistrust between them is very deep. Even though they talk about needing peace, the fight at the UN shows that the risk of a real conflict is very great.
